Andrew Van
Fleet : President / Creative
Director In 1997, Andrew
began his career as a User Interface Designer at TEAM Technologies,
an Internet services company in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He designed
large-scale Internet application user flow diagrams, designed
web interfaces and created website branding for clients including;
The Principal Financial Group, GuideOne Insurance, Oldsmobile,
Northrup King Seeds and Hy-Vee Food Stores.
In 1999, Andrew parlayed his user interface expertise into a
Senior User Interface Designer position at Minneapolis based
IT-Radar, an online IT services marketplace. At IT-Radar he
designed the Internet application's graphical user interfaces,
frequently field-tested the application's usability metrics,
transformed graphic designs into HTML templates and developed
the company's brand identity and promotional materials. He was
also instrumental in integrating IT-Radar's Internet application
with strategic partners including, The Gartner Group, C|Net
and Compaq.
In 2001, TechRepublic purchased IT-Radar.com. Andrew exercised
his stock options and founded Darning Pixels, Inc. He started
the design firm at the UNI Regional Business Center's business
incubator facility in Waterloo, IA. His expertise in both the
graphic design and web design fields, and keen attention to
customer service helped him to quickly expand the firm to over
20 clients in the first year. After two years in the incubator,
he secured a historic downtown building, furnished individual
offices and recruited businesses to share general expenses which
allows him to keep his prices below industry averages. Over
the past 4 years, the business has continuously yielded 20%
growth and to date the firm has provided services to over 50
clients worldwide. Due to the overwhelming success of the infographic
division of Darning Pixels, Inc., he created a subsidiary business,
Illustrated Point, which focuses on the creation of infographics and
conceptual illustration for national and international clients.
Andrew graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls, IA with a B.A. in Graphic Design and a Business Minor
in 1998.
